UIR Graduation

Hi guys,

I have come to the end of my UIR blogging. After taking UIR as my CDS, it really benefit me in many ways. I am able to search for the topic that I want at a faster speed. Understand the type and use of search facilities enable me to use the correct search facility for my search topic.Moreover, I have learnt how to use the advanced search function of search facilities.

I would say UIR is one of my favourite subjects because it is simple as long as work is constantly done and its so fortunate to have Ms Faridah as my UIR Lab tutor. She is helpful and understanding. Whenever I have doubt with the lab's question, she will always be there to clear my doubt. Sometime, due to my competition, I am not able to attend her lesson and lack behind my groupmates, she would ask whether am I able to complete in time. Thank you so much, Ms Faridah. I'm glad I taken UIR as my CDS.

This website is the most funniest site that I have ever seen. The community consist of journalists, cartoonists, writers (a few award-winning ones), scriptwriters, playwrights, teacher, lawyers and doctors. They bring out our local news in funny way and our local language "Singlish".

When Ms Faridah show us a video from talkingcock.com, I really have a good laugh. I can't believe that this group of people can be so funny too.

Let me share with you what I have learnt today :

With that, you can pass your Higher Singlish Language. haha.

I believe that there is no other countries have this kind of website, where people have the chance to speak up, talk nonsense and making fun of the country. I guess that is why Singapore is called Uniquely Singapore!

It's E learning week..
which mean to say I don't have to go lesson this week.
However I still can't rest during these free hours cause next week will be my Imagine Cup Finals. Therefore, I will be using this time do my preparation.

although there is no lesson, but there is still "homework" to do. we are supposed to write up a summary related to our research topic and post it at UIR-Rawkz Wiki . Well, this is my first time using wiki, I find it very useful and user-friendly. It allow me to post my research to share with my groupmates and also read what my groupmates had posted. Having wiki for our group activity, this would be very helpful to us. As all of us can do the activity at their prefered timing, we do not need to wait for each other.

Thanks alot, Ms Faridah and Wiki for making our life so easy! Therefore, we would not make your life hard either.

Internet Search Facilities

After today's lab, I have learnt more search facilities, the way to list the variations to keywords and the comparison of the effectiveness of search facilities.

Now let me share with you, my experience after using various search facilities.

3 main search facilities :

Search Engine ( that I always use)
Google Search & Yahoo! Search

Meta Search Engine ( I just learnt)
Metacrawler, Mamma Meta Search and etc..

Subkect Directory ( I just learnt too)
Yahoo! Directory , Google Directory and etc..

All these search facilities have its usefulness in term of the topic that we are searching for as it display most relevant search results .

And NOW!!

I will introduce the boolean operators that will help you in search results.


AND- narrowing the search, include both phrases
OR – expanding the search, include either of the phrases
AND NOT – restricting the search

these really works!! Try It!!! :)

Well, to end off with today's practical, its really fun learning about search facilities that will DEFINITELY help me with my search topic in future.

Reasons:

Purpose of resource: Golden Village
Reasons:
This above website Golden Village is a cinema operator in Singapore which is a joint venture by Golden Harvest of Hong Kong and Village Roadshow of Australia. From this website, consumer will be able to book movie ticket from the internet which is a way of business transaction.


Resource 4: Entertainment
Purpose of resource: MTV
Reasons:
The above website is a song entertainment where MTV (Music Television) is an American cable television network based in New York City. Launched on August 1, 1981, the original purpose of the channel was to play music videos. Today, MTV plays a limited selection of music videos but primarily broadcasts a variety of pop culture, youth culture, and reality television shows aimed at adolescents and young adults.

In this lab, we have to search the Internet for ONE Personal and ONE Organisational website based on the research topic I had selected in Practical 1 which is the latest trends in the music industry for teenagers.

I have used Google blog search engine to search for some personal website. Well, thanks phyo for introducing me this search engine. Otherwise, I would be still using google search to do my research. After using Google blog search, I find it more efficient and easier. More relevant results were displayed in the screen.

I have used Google search and Yahoo! search engine to search for organisational website. From these search engines, I found some organsational websites such as MTV and Billboard. In these websites, you are able to find news, songs, artists and many more about latest music trends.



Review

From this lab, I have learnt new search engine such Google blog search engine that allow me to find blog easier. And also, the different between a personal website and a organisational website. Using bibliography for the online resources to put in our assignment.

How's life in Temasek Ploytechnic for the past 2years?

Well, during the 1st year of ploy, it was pretty fun hanging around with my new ploy class mate. For that year, subjects was easy to manage. However, it is just the beginning, when I was in year 2, time table start to be packed. Lesson could start from 8am to 6pm. From the past 2 years in ploytechnic, I have learnt alot of new stuff like programming, problem-based learning, resource-based learning , group project. Most importantly, I really enjoyed my life in temasek polytechnic.
